Dressage

WHAT IS DRESSAGE?

The word, translated literally from the French means TRAINING. The object of this training is the harmonious development of the physique, ability and obedience of the horse to make it more agreeable and safer for Man's use. DRESSAGE benefits many forms of horsemanship, from pleasure riding in the country, field hunting, show hunters, jumpers, combined training, to the specialized dressage show mount.

The training scale or pyramid, is an internationally accepted guideline for the training of dressage horses. The steps in the pyramid are as follows:

1. Rhythm (with energy & tempo)
2. Relaxation (with elasticity & suppleness)
3. Connection (acceptance of the bit through acceptance of the aids)
4. Impulsion (increased energy & thrust)
5. Straightness (improved alignment & balance)
6. Collection (increased engagement, lightness of the forehand, self-carriage)

Dressage training has levels. Each level consists of tests that have progressive steps that build on the previous one. The six steps can be found throughout the levels.
